Miss Africa USA 2014: Contestant Lauretta Hassann from Sierra Leone

I believe I am a testament of the real stories of Africans in the United States and the title of Miss Africa USA will give me great opportunities and open doors so that I will continue to encourage people to see that if a former war refugee and immigrant can become an African success story, then so can they.

OurQueens asked Lauretta Hassann four questions...

Why do you believe you should be crowned as the winner of this year’s Miss USA Africa contest? What inspired you to join and compete in this fierce pageant?

In the Miss Africa USA mission statement it says the mission is to empower young women through leadership and community services. This mission statement has inspirited me to want to become the next Miss Africa USA, I believe I am a testament of the real stories of Africans in the United States and the title of Miss Africa USA will give me great opportunities and open doors so that I will continue to encourage people to see that if a former war refugee and immigrant can become an African success story, then so can they. Miss Africa USA is not about who's the fiercest it's about whose time it is to share their store and while doing so being a helping hand not only to Africa but to the world.

Do you believe gay marriage is a sin?

As Christians we were taught to think so but as Christians we were also taught to love. Some people throw out quotes and saying like "God made Adam and Eve... not Adam and Steve". I was not put on this earth to be a judge of who is a sinner and who isn't for when judgment day comes I alone get judge as an individual. I will present my case to God and he the almighty will judge me for my all sins, so no, I do not believe in judging when it comes to sexuality.

What animal best describes you? Why?

Legend has it that as the Portuguese first sailed through the coast of Sierra Leone they heard roars coming from the mountains so they named the new land Serra de Leôa meaning "Lioness Mountains".

I believe that the roars heard on that day were the roars of the future lions and lionesses of Sierra Leone. The lioness is an animal that best describes me. This animal stands tall... conducts itself with dignity, honor and strength. It defends and protects anything that is dear to it and fiercely leads others with a loving heart. The lioness lives in every Sierra Leonean woman's heart and that is why it best describes me.

What has been the most significant achievement in your life? Why?

One of the most significant achievement in my life is representing my nation Sierra Leone as I compete at Miss Africa United States. Growing up and seeing all the hardship around me from war to diseases, to poverty, have made me aware of the pain in Africa. I've always said I want to bring a spotlight and help give africa a new image through pageantry and that is exactly what I will continue to do.
